This was our first time ever throwing a BOY party!!! Up until now, parties with our two girls have always consisted of pink, sparkles & sprinkles! Which I absolutely love, but I was so at a lost when it came to throwing a birthday party for a boy! Especially a one year old little guy who doesn’t really care too much about anything but his mama! We were all sitting around the dinner table one night trying to come up with the perfect theme to celebrate our Pax man when it just hit me…Suns Out Buns Out and have it be just a big summertime bash since he’s an August baby! From there it all just kind of turned into a 1980’s surfer theme full of zinc oxide, surfboards, neon hats and In n Out Burger!

Backdrop:

First off, let’s talk about the backdrop! The Party Pantry made the cutest fringe backdrop that I topped with a DIY balloon garland and some letter balloons from Party City! I even found the cutest Tie Dye Happy Birthday Balloon there too! While planning a party, I always think you have to put some effort into the backdrop since that’s where most of the pictures and special moments (especially for a first bday) like singing Happy Birthday and the cake smash will take place! We hung up all these by using stucco tape that we found at Lowes! It all held up until the next day when we took it down!

Table Décor:

For the table décor I just went with some palm tree tablecloths (plastic because hello…snow cones & In N Out burgers for a kids birthday don’t mix with cloth!) Then we spray painted pineapples the night before in all different neon colors to match the 80’s vibe! These were probably my favorite things to make for his party because they were just too cute! I also had ordered some cute mini beach pails & shovels from Oriental Trading and added those to the tables, along with some honeycomb tissue poms! Above the tables, hanging from the awnings, we strung more of the neon fringe from The Party Pantry to match the backdrop!

Party Favors:

I knew I wanted the party favors to be displayed like they were merchandise at Paxton’s Surf Shop! I ordered the surfboard backdrop from Oriental Trading and the “Suns Out Buns Out” balloons from Etsy! We also used the stucco tape from Lowes to stick these to the wall. As far as the favors themselves, we went the cutest neon surfer hats from Squad Life Apparel where she put custom surfer phrases on them! We did both kids & adult sized hats and almost everyone had one on! It was so cute to see! I also had beach ball & shark cups along with neon 80’s style sunglasses for the kids to wear! The only mistake I made was putting the Zinc Oxide on this table where the kids all got into it and pretty much had it everywhere around the house! Yikes! Thank goodness for magic erasers!

Dessert Table:

Last, but my goodness, certainly not least was the dessert table! This was probably my favorite part of the entire party because of the Suns Out Buns Out pictures we hung above the table! From the second we decided on the party theme, this idea came to mind and I wouldn’t stop until it happened! On our last day at the beach, I made my husband drive us down to the sand that morning to solely capture this shot for his party! Anyways, I made them into over sized black and white prints and couldn’t love them more! I even contemplated keeping these cute bun pics up as our regular framed art in our breakfast nook, but thought people might think we’re a tad bit weird if we did that! Haha We filled the dessert table with all the yummy neon treats like surfboard lollipops, mini donuts, rice krispie treats, mini cupcakes & personalized cookies! For his smash cake we went with an ombre wave cake with graham cracker sand & a palm tree name topper from Glam Banners!

This whole party was so much fun to plan and even more fun having all our family & friends there celebrating Paxton turning ONE!
